We are an RCM vendor, so read this with that in mind. These are still the questions we would want asked of us, and the ones that separate a coding partner from a data entry shop with a sales team.
About the people
- Who codes my charts, and what credential do they hold?
- How many home health episodes has that person coded?
- Is there a second reviewer, and what do they check?
- What happens when a coder leaves? Who picks up my account?
About the process
- Do you work inside my EMR or export data to your own system?
- How do coder queries reach my clinicians, and what is the expected response time?
- What is your measured accuracy rate, and who measures it?
- Show me a real QA report with the client name removed.
About what happens when it goes wrong
- If a chart you coded is denied, who works the appeal?
- What is your escalation path, and who answers the phone at 4pm on a Friday?
- Can I leave, and what happens to my data if I do?
The last one matters more than people expect. A vendor who cannot describe an orderly exit has not thought carefully about the relationship.
